After many years of delays starting from 2017, the first Club Med in South Africa and sub-Saharan African has finally graced the KwaZulu-Natal shoreline. The new resort is expected to help revitalise tourism along the province's North Coast.

While we have yet to see if this launch will challenge the foothold Cape Town has on South African tourism, the luxury resort concept has many South Africans intrigued. Estimated at R2-billion, this is Club Med's first ever beachfront accommodation with access to a Big Five safari experience.

The resort has already welcomed its first guests in July, with the property receiving its occupancy certificate in May 2026 ahead of a phased opening after 28 months of construction. The guest experience incorporates South African-inspired design, locally sourced ingredients and activities that specifically showcase the region.

In doing so, Club Med has introduced itself through the destination, instead of letting the destination play a supporting role to its own brand image.

Additionally, the launch places an emphasis on developing local talent and celebrating regional influences. Ahead of opening, Club Med enlisted Executive Chef, Abdelaziz Guessoum, to lead the culinary programme while working alongside local teams. The resort's restaurants combine international cuisine with South African flavours to create an experience that reflects both the brand's global identity and its local surroundings.

This development marks the hospitality group's official entry into a new market after nearly a decade of planning. However, alongside its luxury offering, the resort does come with a focus on supporting tourism — and, resultantly, job creation — as well as local partnerships along what's aimed to be KwaZulu-Natal's riviera.

With construction complete and guests checking in, attention now turns to whether Club Med's South African debut can live up to the anticipation that has surrounded it for years.
