Scott Peter Smith, head of multimedia at Arena Holdings, says, "While we've experienced consistent growth of the channel over a sustained period, our focus on the production of smart and relevant COVID-19 content has resulted in an uptick in subscriptions as South Africans look to stay informed about the coronavirus situation during lockdown."

The content produced by Multimedia LIVE sees consistent viewership in the thousands, with videos like Under the microscope: Here’s what the coronavirus looks like receiving more than 360 000 views.

The vast majority of the Multimedia LIVE audience is South African, with a relatively even split between male and female viewers between 25 to 34 years old.

"Multimedia LIVE's video production team is small but dedicated," says Smith. "Three video journalists in Johannesburg and one in Cape Town are responsible for shooting content and have been kitted out with protective gear to ensure they can continue reporting during lockdown."

"The commitment of the team run by Reinart Toerien is remarkable. Everyone has their heads down, well aware of the essential service they are providing to South Africans," adds Smith.

On further ambitions for the Multimedia LIVE channel, Smith says the focus will remain on delivering high-quality editorial output.

"Creating better and more relevant content in a cost-effective way to find new audiences for all our titles is essential. YouTube plays an important role in ensuring the findability and shareability of that content," Smith says.

Besides video, Multimedia LIVE has also indicated that it is working to upscale podcast offerings and develop shows with the right voices and personalities.

"We've been in an experimental stage, which is now moving into a more stable position. Our numbers are looking good, our audio audiences are growing, so watch this space for fresh podcast offerings," Smith concludes.
